Description
The November Chamber luncheon has been cancelled due to lack of sign ups and the anticipated changes being made by the Sedgwick County Board of Health. We plan to reschedule this program for a future luncheon.
Program: In honor of Veterans Day, we are privileged to have Retired Army Staff Sergeant Derek Moody speak about his two tours in Iraq. Derek will talk about his survival after two attacks while serving in Iraq and his struggles after returning home. Derek was able to turn depression and lack of mental health services into a positive, not only for him but also for fellow veterans. Below is a synopsis of Derek’s story.
In 2005, while in Iraq, Derek was in a Humvee with five other soldiers. Their Humvee hit an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and was blown up. Everyone in the Humvee was killed except for Derek. Derek suffered multiple injuries and was sent back to the United States for treatment. After spending one year in the U.S. rehabilitating, Derek was offered a retirement from the Army. However, he chose to return to his unit in Iraq and did return in 2007. During that same year, his unit was tasked with clearing some structures in a town. While doing so, Derek was climbing a ladder to gain access to a roof when a sniper shot him. he bullet hit the back of Derek’s helmet, entering his head but did not penetrate his skull. The bullet circled around his skull and exited above his right eye. He then fell from the ladder to the ground and was shot six more times with machine gunfire. These rounds hit his protective vest, but one round did fragment and entered his chest. At this same time, the enemy fired Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) in Derek’s direction, which exploded around ten feet from where Derek was lying. After surviving this, Derek spent another year recovering in the United States and subsequently retired from the military.
